September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. One in 5 children in the United States are obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that at one time were mainly seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
Many Things can cause childhood obesity. Some kids have it because of their genes, while others because of what they eat and how active they are. Sleep is also important – kids who don’t get enough sleep can be at risk. Kids with obesity can get sick more easily and could have trouble moving and playing. It can also cost more money for medical care.
Childhood obesity can be prevented and decreased by:
Eating healthy food options
Get moving as a family
Getting enough sleep
Less screen time
Talk to your doctor
